FLORIDA: The George Zimmerman murder trial opened up with a big bang. Well, maybe not a bang exactly. More like the deafening silence from a bad joke that apparently no one got. It brought to mind the awkward tapping on the microphone followed by – is this thing on? The joke spoke to the unbiased juror who knows nothing at all about the case, but even the prosecutors looked a bit confused. Talk about a heavy dose of courtroom corny.
Don West, Zimmerman’s joke-telling defense attorney, admitted that a murder trial might be an odd place for a ‘knock knock’ joke but then commenced to leap right in and tell one anyway:
“George Zimmerman, who?”
“Alright good. You’re on the jury.”
It’s a risk when a lawyer stands in front of a jury telling jokes. We really aren’t that funny. Perhaps Mr. West should stick to his day job and leave the joke telling to Jerry Seinfeld.
