OREGON: A homeless man walked into a Bank of America, handed over a note saying, ‘This is a hold up. Give me a dollar.’ Then he took a seat in the lobby and quietly waited for police to arrest him. Once arrested, 50-year old Timothy Dean Alsip told officers he had “robbed” the bank in order to receive medical care in jail.
A dollar may not buy a cup of coffee on the street but in jail, it buys Alsip adequate medical insurance.
As creative a crime as this was, it wasn’t the first time a dollar bought jailhouse insurance. Alsip may have been following in the footsteps of a North Carolina bandit who did the same thing two years ago. The 59-year old healthcare thief had a master plan: Rob a bank for $1, get arrested, stay in jail long enough to get free medical care and then qualify for Social Security when he got out.
Now that’s a plan!
