Elliott James, Prosecutor Orleans Parish – From the Chronicles of America’s Dumbest Criminals
GEORGIA: One Georgia man quickly learned a lesson about rude behavior in public: If you’re caught laughing while attending a City Council meeting, you will be arrested.
Dustin Drabot denies he laughed, of course, but says even so, “It’s not a crime to giggle.” He does admit that he may have smirked a little but he accuses the other people in the audience of laughing. According to Drabot, the incident started when the Mayor walked out of the city council meeting before it was adjourned. The audience, in turn, laughed at the spectacle of yet another dysfunctional town meeting ending before it was properly adjourned. Drabot said the Mayor Pro Tem took over and said he would order anyone who laughed removed.
“If I did laugh it wasn’t a loud obstructionist laugh,” Drabot protests. “It was a ‘Huh, hahaha’ under my breath.”
Ahh but the accused doth protest too much. And, there’re two sides to every story, no matter how silly the story might be. The Mayor Pro Tem says Drabot was persistently disruptive claiming he heckled and laughed while the meeting was in progress. And still there are others who claim Drabot punched a hole in the wall and broke two officers’ glasses as they removed him from the session.
Mere poppycock, says Drabot, none of this is true! When he gets his day in court he plans to plead – NOT GUILTY!
