NEW YORK: When third grade teacher Tamu Francis saw one student bullying another, she tried to teach the 8-year old bully a lesson by making him stand up in front of the class while his victim hit him back. After the bully was pummeled, Francis was reported to have said: ‘Well, that’s what you get.’ Francis was also heard telling the student, ‘When you act like a dog, you get treated like a dog’ said Lisa Brogan, the arbitrator who presided over the teacher’s termination hearing.
Francis denied the account of events saying that she tried to teach the whole class a lesson by asking the bully, ‘How would you like it if [he] was to hit you back?’ She said the victim misunderstood her message and got in a quick jab to the gut before she could protect the bully.
Brogan didn’t buy it. ‘She exhibited extremely poor judgment and made an enormous blunder by trying to mete out a certain brand of justice for the class bully.’
The teacher’s brash brand of anti-bullying nearly got her fired. The Board of Education instead slapped her with a $10,000 fine.
