CALIFORNIA: The 12-year-old brother of a California girl found stabbed to death in their home last month will be charged with homicide. After a two-week investigation and 2,000 manpower hours, the evidence pointed to the 12-year old. The very same child a grieving mother said was “protective” of his sister.
Although authorities have not released information that led to his arrest, the fact that there was no evidence of a break in, knives from the home were seized and the 12-year old was the only one in the home with Leila Fowler at the time of the attack spoke volumes.
According to the coroner, the 8-year old was stabbed multiple times and died of shock and hemorrhaging caused by the stab wounds. Like most who are following this story, I am shocked at the age of a child who could exact such brutality upon another.
But what’s most disturbing is the manipulation and calculated efforts of the 12-year old. Not only did he try to deflect attention away from himself by accusing an unknown intruder, he provided authorities with a detailed description, describing the intruder as tall with long gray hair. He also participated in the search for the sister that he knew to be dead and stood next to his father and stepmother at a vigil.
Even in the face of this heinous crime, the laws of a civilized society protect our youth from the harshness of criminal punishment. The theory of juvenile justice is to rehabilitate the wayward young. The 12-year old will be charged in the carnage of his own sister but his case will not leave the four cornered walls of the juvenile court. If convicted, his stay in a juvenile detention facility will not extend beyond his 18th birthday.
