GEORGIA: A man failing to secure a ladder to his vehicle causing a fatal crash has been charged with vehicle homicide. Police say the unsecured ladder fell from a work truck being driven by Shawn McGrew on I-285. The lost ladder caused an accident minutes later when a vehicle stopped on the interstate to avoid the ladder. The chain reaction of a semi tractor trailer slowing down caused a Mazda to slam into its rear killing the driver of the Mazda instantly. The ladder had an inscription on it that led to McGrew. McGrew told police that he didn’t realize he had lost the ladder until after he had traveled further down the road.
Prosecutors could charge McGrew with misdemeanor or felony vehicle homicide. If charged as a felony, McGrew could face fifteen years in jail.
I posted this story as a reminder to motorists of the dangers of hauling items on their vehicles. Think twice before strapping that mattress onto the roof of your car, spring for a U-Haul instead. If your negligence causes harm or death to someone, you may face both civil and criminal consequences.
